Assigning Grades for the Stock Market Game

The Georgia Council on Economic Education understands that teachers have a lot to get done in a short amount of time. Programs like the Georgia Stock Market Game can help them make the most of their instructional time. But to grade students on the value of their team’s portfolio would be inappropriate. Here are a variety of other ways you might assign a grade for Stock Market Game activities.

Some Ways to Grade
Maintain a file of all transactions.
Keep a daily record of stocks owned.
Graph a stock’s movement during the 10-week trading session.
Create a graph reviewing a portfolio’s performance.
Provide a written rationale for all transactions.
Clip newspaper articles on stocks bought or sold.
Track a market index over the 10-week trading period.
Keep accurate and neat records.
Track regional and state team rankings weekly.
Develop a personal investment plan based on personal goals.
Analyze various stocks by comparing strategies of stock selection.
Write a position paper on a decision made within a company that affected the stock.
Demonstrate the differences between speculation and investment.
Relate and assess the influence of current events on stock prices and trading decisions.
Describe a current event and the economic environment that could affect investment decisions.
Write an essay explaining an investment strategy and why it worked – or didn’t.
Write an essay on what a student would have done differently if they could.
Write an essay on a topic such as the 1929 stock market crash.
Collect information and write or present orally a report on a specific company, including:
  • product or service
  • financial data
  • current events related to stock price changes
  • major competitors, any recent challenges
Interview a stockbroker, business owner or investor.
Read a book on financial investments and write a book report.
Read the financial section of the newspaper daily and create a scrapbook of important new stories.
Watch business or financial-related television programs and keep a lot of key stock market newsmakers.
Clip newspaper and magazine ads for publicly traded companies that produce products students buy.
Prepare and participate in a field trip to a stockbroker’s office.
Design a mural or bulletin board on investment.
Create a crossword puzzle or jumbles game with investing terms.
Put together a video, program, or skit on the stock market.
Draw a cartoon or create a comic book or board game related to the stock market.
